Preparing for a day at slopes

Hitting the snowy peaks unprepared is like showing up for your beach vacation without your swimsuit. Every winter, novice skiers take ridiculous chances that see them returning from their ski vacation with plaster bracelets - not a great way to accessorize. Learn from them and cover the basics. And remember to pay attention to signs designating the degree of difficulty for a slope .

Beginners

  • Take a lesson. A good instructor teaches the basics of keeping balanced as well as starting, slowing and stopping.
  • Stick to smaller hills and local ski resorts. Avoid difficult blue square and black diamond hills until you learn to slow and stop without using a tree.
  • Take it slow and don’t overexert yourself. Just because you have mastered the bunny slope, doesn’t mean you’re capable of powering down the black diamond.
  • Dress warm and in layers. Wear a waterproof jacket , mitts and a toque .
  • You’ll thank yourself later for packing a second set for when you want something dry to change into.
  • Wear waterproof pants that let you move. Jeans are a moisture magnet and restrict movement. If you don’t have the latest in fashionable gear, slip on a pair of windbreaker pants over your long johns.
  • The best days to ski are cold days. Powder snow is lighter and easier to navigate than heavy ice crystals, but conditions can change quickly. Check weather reports before heading out, but check in with the lodge periodically if conditions look changeable.

Intermediate

  • Speed and technique increase with confidence, so don’t tackle hills that make your heart sink looking down from above.
  • Hand-leg coordination helps you control your skis with ease. At this level, your body will remember practiced muscle movements and your skiing will look less choppy and more controlled.
  • Lessons are still an asset for intermediate skiers, but at this stage you can concentrate on techniques such as carving.
