Backpacking Backpacks

For short journeys or multi-day excursions

Backpacking covers a wide range of activities - such as hiking, trekking, camping, and mountaineering - because of this you’ll find there are many types of backpacks on the market to accommodate various outdoor activities. Some climbers may prefer to use specialized backpacks such as alpine packs ; while adventurers on long treks may use expedition packs . However, most casual backpackers use a general type of pack known as a backpacking backpack.

Backpacking backpacks come in an assortment of sizes, shapes, frame designs, colors, and materials. The type of backpacking backpack that will appeal to you will depend on how, where and when you’re going to use it.

The main thing is to get a backpack that’s big enough to carry all of your gear, clothes and personal items, etc. Backpacking backpacks may have several smaller pockets and compartments or they may only have one or two larger storage areas. Stuff sacks and mesh bags are used to help you organize your smaller items inside big compartments.

Some of these backpacks will have map storage pockets and water bottle pockets. Most of them are also compatible with water hydration systems - which allow you to fill an internal bladder with water and suck it out of a tube while you’re traveling. Some backpacks also have safety whistles, ice axe loops and haul loops.

Most backpacking packs are made out of lightweight materials - such as some form of nylon - and a lot of them are reinforced to fight off abrasions and may also be coated for water resistance. However, a rain cover is a good idea to make sure the pack stays dry. Backpacking backpacks are often made more for comfort than other models - such as alpine packs - and you’ll find they have padded shoulder straps and waist belts. Many packs also have some kind of mesh or foam panel that rests near the middle of your back for comfort. Some may also be ventilated.
