Bites and Stings - Insect

Taking the bite out of bugs

Depending on where your outdoor adventure takes you, the natural beauty of your surroundings can be marred by insects. Mosquitoes, black flies, deer flies and ticks are more than North American summer annoyances. While North American mosquitoes won't give you malaria, they might carry West Nile virus. Some species of ticks carry Lyme disease, and anyone who's been bitten by a deer fly will wonder if Shakespeare had these voracious insects in mind when he had Shylock demand a pound of flesh.

While most insect bites are merely uncomfortable, snakes and scorpions pose real dangers.

  • Wear protective clothing: long-sleeved shirts, long pants tucked into socks, and, if necessary, bug-net hats and clothing.
  • Wear neutral colors (dark colors attract biting insects, and bright colors and floral prints attract stinging insects).
  • Use unscented soaps and shampoo. Scents can attract insects.

If you are bitten by an insect,

  • Apply topical relief, such as

    • Ice
    • Baking soda
    • Anesthetic cream.
  • Take an antihistamine if the bite begins to itch or swell.

If you or a member of your party is allergic to bee stings, make sure your first aid kit includes a bee kit or EpiPen, and that others know how to administer the necessary countermeasures.

Ticks

In North America, more than 200 tick species inhabit wooded areas, lawns, grass lands, beaches and some urban areas.

To avoid ticks,

  • Stay on trails.
  • Spray your clothing with insect repellant containing 5 % permethrin.
  • Spray exposed skin with DEET.
  • Frequently check clothing and your body for ticks and tick bites.

Lyme disease is the most common health complication associated with ticks, but it's har...
