Description: Leleiwi Overlook is reached by an easy .25 mile round trip trail. The views at the end of the trail encompass a colorful volcanic landscape of cinder cones within the Wilderness Area.

Description: The Halema’uma’u Trail descends 400 feet through rain forest to the caldera floor. The trail crosses the Kilauea Caldera to the Halema’uma’u Crater. This trail leads to the southern edge of the caldera where it joins the Crater Rim Trail. Hikers may return via Byron Ledge and Crater Rim Trail or retrace their steps. Sights of interest on this trail are plants, birds, insects, pahoehoe lava flows, steam vents, spatter ramparts, crater and caldera. You should bring water and food. Prepare for hot, dry, wet and windy weather. Beware of sulfur fumes; people with heart and breathing problems should avoid this trail.

Description: The ‘Iliahi (Sandalwood) Trail leads you on a hike through rain forest, past steam vents with views of Kilauea Caldera, Halema’uma’u Crater and Mauna Loa. You should bring water. Stay on the trail and beware of steam vents, earthcracks and cliffs.

Description: The Pu’u Huluhulu Trail crosses the 1973 and 1974 lava flows, through kipuka, past lava trees and climbs 150 feet to the summit of Pu’u Huluhulu. On a clear day, you can see Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, Pu’u ‘O’o and the Pacific Ocean. Sights of interest along this trail are Pahoehoe lava, kipuka, lava trees, cinder cone, lava shield, pioneer plants and panoramic vistas. You should bring water and prepare for hot and dry or wet and windy weather. Follow the rock cairns over the lava flows. Sulfur fumes may be strong on some days.

Description: The Pa Kaoao Trail is a short trail of less than 0.5 miles that leads to the top of Pa Kaoao, a small cinder cone. This is one of the highest vantage points in the park and this trail offers excellent views of the Wilderness Area. Stone shelters built by the early Hawaiians that explored Haleakala long ago are still visible from the trail.
