Even though many water sources in the backcountry appear to be fresh, clear and pristine, consider them hostile territory for the human digestive tract.

So how do you swing a multi-day trek when each person needs a gallon of drinking water a day? While boiling is the best way to ensure there are no bugs waiting in the water to ambush your system, this takes a lot of time and fuel. If you're camping in an area where fires are not permitted or if you run out of fuel, you need a backup to ensure drinking water safety .

Assessing the Competition

If you think toting a few tablets is easier than packing a filtration system, think again.

  • Iodine kills most, but not all, germs and is not recommended for pregnant women or people with thyroid problems. While iodine kills Giardia , it doesn't kill Cryptosporidium, an equally nasty parasite. Less effective in cold or cloudy water, iodine also leaves an unpleasant taste.
  • Chlorine or halazone tablets are even less reliable than iodine and don't necessarily kill Giardia since they are less effective in cold, murky or acidic water. These offer the poorest protection.
  • Water filtration and purification systems are available as pumps or drip bags. Filters with a pore size of 1 micron or smaller effectively remove both Giardia and Cryptosporidium.
