Choose correctly - the first time

Buying a snowboard depends on your commitment to the sport and how you plan to use it. If you get off on freestyle, jumps and rails, choose a good quality freestyle board. But if you don't plan on hitting the park hard, an all-around freeride board will suffice.

When starting out snowboarding, borrow or rent equipment first. Visit ski / snowboard shows before or after the season to cash in on specials and liquidations. When buying new equipment, purchasing it all at the same time usually leads to a better deal in the end.

When deciding on a board, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Park or no park - Do you plan on catching air and feeding your trick fixation or snowboarding at a resort?
  • Powder or groom - What kind of a hill do you plan on snowboarding? Powder-rich hills like Whistler require a different board than snowboarding the ice and machine-groomed hills you'll find in Maine.
  • Pro or beginner - What is you ability? If you've mastered the basics and want to begin working on your style, you'll need a different board than an untried beginner.
