Buying - New, Used or Rent

Deciding on your telemark skis

Ever wonder why garages were invented? To store all that useless equipment we thought we’d need. While we Nomadiks are all about passionate involvement in outdoor adventures, our back pockets are lined with lint rather than cash and we often need to practice a little restraint when it comes to outfitting ourselves.

Telemark skiing is a discipline that requires diligence and an insane amount of hard-headed passion. Eventually you’ll require special gear, but not when you’re early in the game. The technique necessary to properly telemark ski requires a strenuous, often painful, thigh muscle workout. Go to a shop prepared, but don’t be too eager to purchase. Make sure you get answers to all your burning questions. If you can’t think of what to ask, use our sample questions to get you going.

  • Transferability - Ask the shopkeeper if a regular pair of cross-country or alpine skis will perform just as well. Explain your intentions - the seller may be able to offer you a pair of skis that can serve several purposes.
  • Flexibility - Do you want very flexible or more rigid skis? Ask which type is best for your situation and skill level.
  • Speed or ease - If you want speed, go for a conventional ski. These skis have the added bonus of offering more balance. If you want to make turning easier, pick up a pair of shaped skis. Ask the shopkeeper to show you both.

Boots-n-all

  • Once you have enough information on the skis, it is time to check out some boots. Since your feet have direct contact with your boots, they’re the most important item to thoroughly check before making a purchase. Try on several pairs, walk around in them, dance a jig, anything - but get a good feel for them. Your little piggies will thank you later. If you feel comfortable and can envision yourself dashing through the backwoods in these babies, make your purchase but don’t forget to inquire about the return policy.
