The Perfect PFD Fit

The Perfect PFD Fit

Safety-first fashion

Once you've decided which type (or types) of PFD suits your needs, make sure you get a good fit. A life jacket won't keep you afloat if it's hanging off your shoulders. While it's not the sort of tailored look you want for officewear, if you plan to spend a lot of time on the water, make sure your life vest is snug and comfortable. After all, it's the most important fashion statement you'll ever make.

  • Try, try, try before you buy: Check out different models in the categories you need. Then try them on wearing different clothing - you won't always be boating in a T-shirt. How does the PFD feel with a light sweater or jacket under it?

  • Snug as a bug: PFDs must fit snugly in order to work. Try on the PFD to ensure it's the right size: Working from the bottom up, tighten all the straps and close all the zippers. With your arms raised above your head, have someone lift the PFD by the shoulders. If the life jacket moves freely or if the main zipper touches your nose, it's too big.

Fit Kids

It's doubly important that a child's life jacket fit snugly. Since children often panic in traumatic situations, a loose PFD may slip off when it's needed most. Yes, we're repeating ourselves, but it's an important detail that's tempting to overlook when fitting a wiggly or stubborn child.

Buying a PFD for a child can also be a challenge, since they grow so quickly. Regardless of growth spurts, buy for the size the chil...
